I've typed this over and over again. Stared at the screen for hours, typing and retyping. Changed topics again and again. I've put this burden upon myself to say the perfect words, share the perfect message. It just wasn't happening.
Then, I read a beautiful verse in Colossians that I've never given much thought to before.
Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. -Colossians 4:5-6
Sometimes our words don't come out as eloquent as we desire. We go over conversations repeatedly in our heads, how we should have said this or that. We forget that it's not anything we say, write, or do that changes hearts. It's Christ. He uses the shy people with stammering voices and shaky knees just as much as He uses the most confident of public speakers.
When you don't have the words, speak grace. "Then," Paul says, "you may know how you ought to answer each person."
This week I really don't have enough words, but one of the things I love about Jesus is how He multiplies and amplifies His truth, through us, in ways we cannot even begin to imagine.
If you find yourself talking to someone who hasn't come to know the Lord and you are at a loss for words, remember this. The smallest of statements Christ could use to work wonders in them. When in doubt, start with grace.
And add a little salt.
